Startup compliance, answered

Do I need GST registration for freelancing in India?

Short answer

Short answer: not until you cross Rs 20 lakh in annual turnover, unless you fall into one of a few specific situations that make it mandatory from day one. This guide explains exactly when a freelancer has to register, when it is optional, and why many freelancers choose to register early anyway.

The basic rule for freelancers

If you provide services as a freelancer, GST registration becomes mandatory once your aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses Rs 20 lakh. In a handful of special category states the limit is lower, often Rs 10 lakh. Below the threshold, you are free to operate without registering.

Aggregate turnover means all of your taxable income on the same PAN, added up across the whole year. It is measured on a rolling basis, so the obligation begins the moment you cross the line, not at the start of the next year.

When you must register from day one

Two situations override the threshold and force registration immediately, regardless of how little you earn:

Exporting your services abroad

If you invoice foreign clients, your services are usually treated as a zero-rated export, which means you do not add GST to the invoice, provided the supply qualifies as an export (payment in convertible foreign exchange, recipient outside India, and so on).

To export without blocking your working capital, file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on the GST portal once per financial year. It lets you export without paying IGST upfront and reclaiming it later. Even a small solo consultant billing overseas benefits from this one form.

Why many freelancers register voluntarily

Plenty of freelancers register before they have to, for practical reasons. A GSTIN on your invoice makes you easier to work with for business clients who want to claim input credit. You can also claim input credit on your own business purchases, from software subscriptions to equipment. The trade-off is the ongoing filing work, so weigh the benefit against the effort based on who your clients are.

How to register

Registration is free on the official GST portal. You will need your PAN, proof of business or address, bank details and a photograph. Once registered, you must file periodic returns even in months with no income, so factor that ongoing responsibility into your decision.

Common mistakes to avoid

💬If any of this is unclear or you would rather not handle it yourself, documentation and applications can be done for you as an optional paid service, in cash or a small equity stake with written guardrails. You can always use the official portals or any professional you choose. See how it works.
